2025 INDUCTEE CHUCK BURR

Chuck Burr’s BMX journey began in 1980 in a deeply personal way—through his three-year-old son, Ryan. Curious to see a neighbor boy race behind the Northeast YMCA in Lincoln, Chuck soon found himself helping parents run races. That casual support quickly grew into a lifelong commitment to Nebraska BMX, where Chuck became a trusted and familiar figure to riders, families, and volunteers alike.

In 1981, when the YMCA needed the land back, Chuck stepped up, leasing land near Waverly and building Gear Jammers BMX, complete with a starting gate and registration building. Riders from Lincoln and surrounding areas embraced the new track, drawn not only to its challenges but to the welcoming atmosphere Chuck fostered. He emphasized safety, fairness, and fun, ensuring parents and kids felt confident and included.

By 1982, Gear Jammers returned to the Northeast YMCA, where Chuck continued operating the track through 1985. Known for his hands-on approach, he stayed late to repair gates, smooth track surfaces, and fine-tune layouts for the best racing conditions. Chuck made a point of connecting with every rider, offering encouragement and guidance regardless of skill level, building a true BMX family.

In 1986, when the YMCA sold the land, Chuck moved all track equipment to Oak Lake, helping design a new course and helped establish Star City BMX. Under his leadership, Star City became more than a track—it became a hub for Nebraska BMX, a place where families gathered, racers learned sportsmanship, and young riders discovered a love for the sport. Chuck even visited other state tracks with Ryan in 1987, bringing back ideas to improve the Nebraska racing experience.

Through decades of dedication, Chuck Burr built lasting relationships with riders, parents, and the ABA. He celebrated victories, consoled defeats, mentored track helpers, and helped the sport flourish. His legacy isn’t just in the tracks he built or the races he ran—it’s in the community, friendships, and memories he helped create. Chuck’s tireless commitment to BMX has left an indelible mark, ensuring the sport thrives in Nebraska for generations to come. For Chuck’s dedication to BMX, we proudly honor him in the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame.
