Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame Finds Permanent Home at the Museum of American Speed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LINCOLN, NE – August 12, 2025 – The Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame, the nation’s longest-running State BMX Hall of Fame, has officially partnered with the Museum of American Speed to establish its first-ever permanent home. Founded in 2010 by Omaha native and former professional BMX racer Tim Lillethorup, the Hall of Fame recognizes the racers, industry leaders, and supporters who have shaped BMX in Nebraska.

BMX began in Southern California in the 1970s and quickly gained momentum nationwide, with Nebraska becoming home to multiple tracks and a thriving scene. Today, BMX is a global sport and an Olympic discipline, celebrated in both racing and freestyle formats.

Since its inception, the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame has honored its inductees through its website, www.NebraskaBMXHallofFame.com, and annual induction ceremonies, but until now, it lacked a dedicated physical space.

“This new location at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln provides the perfect setting to preserve Nebraska’s BMX heritage and honor the individuals who made it possible,” said Lillethorup. “It ensures the stories and legacy of our sport will be shared with future generations.”

The Museum of American Speed, already home to several prestigious motorsports halls of fame, will dedicate a full exhibit area to BMX history. Visitors will explore detailed inductee profiles alongside vintage BMX bikes from every decade, rider uniforms, trophies, dioramas, and artifacts that capture the sport’s culture and evolution.

In addition, the Museum will now host the annual Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony, with the 2025 event set for October 25. Full event and ticket details will be announced soon.

The Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame celebrates contributors from across the sport, with categories including: Riders of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Freestyle, and Industry. Selections are made by a dedicated Board of Advisors who manage nominations and events.

Founded in 1992 by “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith, the Museum of American Speed spans 200,000 square feet and attracts visitors from around the world. Exhibits include the Unser Racing Museum, Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Hall of Fame, Herzog Motorsports, NASCAR, SCCA Hall of Fame, GM, and more.
