Doug Kahl was an original member of the Bill’s Bicycle Barn BMX Race Team from Omaha, Nebraska. He was a pioneer in the sport during the early days of Bicycle Motocross racing. He helped build Omaha’s first BMX track called Spinnin’ Spokes and raced at many of the first BMX tracks in Nebraska under the National Bicycle Association (NBA) sanction. He also raced in the American Bicycle Association. Doug also rode for a number of other bike shop teams including Olympia Cycle and Rockbrook Schwinn. He was known for his fearless riding style and ability to jump higher than almost anyone. His antics earned him the nickname “Lugnuts”. Doug was inducted into the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame on August 21st, 2010.

Doug was from the Rockbrook neighborhood in west Omaha where the bike shop Rockbrook Schwinn was located. Doug was one of the locals at Rockbrook Schwinn. On any given summer afternoon Doug could be found hanging out at the shop. He was a popular kid to have around. The mechanics loved to joke around with Doug as they worked on the bikes and daydreamed about riding.

When the first track in Omaha began a racing schedule Doug became a regular there as well. There was one thing to notice about Doug right away. He was an insane rider! He could somehow jump higher than anyone! In fact it was his fearless riding style that soon earned him the nickname "Lugnuts". I believe that Lugnuts may have been one of the things Doug would yell as his launched his way over the downhill jump at Spinnin' Spokes or as he flew sky high at Standard Trails.

Speaking of Standard Trails. Doug owned that place. No one flew higher over that tabletop there - before or after Doug Kahl.

Legend has it that Chris Heyden's infamous Gnarlsbad BMX was named after Chris heard Doug yelling "Gnarlsbad" each time he launched the tabletop at Standard Trails.

Doug was also one of quickest riders in his age class and continued winning races until his retirement from BMX in the early 1980's.

I'm proud to help induct my friend Doug Kahl into the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame.
