Steve Gavin was an original member of the Bill’s Bicycle Barn BMX Race Team from Omaha, Nebraska. He was a pioneer in the sport during the early days of Bicycle Motocross racing. He helped build Omaha’s first BMX track called Spinnin’ Spokes and raced at many of the first BMX tracks in Nebraska under the National Bicycle Association (NBA) sanction. He also raced in the American Bicycle Association where he competed in the PRO division. Steve also rode for a number of other bike shop teams including Olympia Cycle, The Bike Rack and Freewheelin’. Steve was inducted into the Nebraska BMX Hall of Fame on August 21st, 2010.

There was a core group of riders that shaped BMX, first in Nebraska and then through the Midwest. Steve Gavin and his younger brother Jeff were among that group. As BMX spread across the country Steve began traveling to national races with his friends from Omaha - Chris Heyden and Tim Lillethorup. Soon they combined with Lincoln, Nebraska riders Joe Baumert, Rex Reason and Greg Grubbs to compete at nationals from coast to coast.

Steve continued to compete in the ABA Pro class through the 1981 season. In 2006 he began racing again in the Expert and Cruiser divisions at ABA Nationals.
